Torrent droid

March 12th, 2009 admin No comments

On one hand there are guys from the cultural industry trying to terminate Pirate Bay, saying the file sharing through BitTorrent network is against artists’ rights. On the other, people think this is a brave new distribution channel to be explored.

And that’s why Torrent Droid has it all to become a hit. This is how it works: you scan a dvd box with your cell phone, acquire the bar code and are redirected to a torrent site to select the file. Then you remotely command your pc at home to start downloading it. You get home and the movie is waiting to be watched. How about it?

The full version should be out soon. For now you can watch a video of the app running:

You gotta be joking

You might think that a grown-up playing with toy cars and a remote is a joke, but in this case the joke got quite serious when an Englishman, during his spare time, decided to use his cell phone to play. The car was a F1 McLaren replica, he posted a video on YouTube, the team’s engineers saw it, liked it and invited the guy to come down and meet them.

Moral of the story? They had a real full-sized car being controlled via Bluetooth, and Lewis Hamilton even played with it. The result was a fantastic viral video for the team. Check it out:

Phone testing

February 5th, 2009 admin No comments

So we recently wrote about an iPhone app that helped treating stuttering, which surprised us because of the unusual nature of it. Now, really different is what these scientists from UCLA have developed.

The guys took a Sony Ericsson, added this, replaced that, adapted a thing or two and with 50 bucks they turned the phone into a mobile lab, capable of performing blood tests and detecting AIDS, leukemia, malaria, anemia and others, through T or red cells counting.

The test is done analyzing the cells shadows in pics taken with the phone camera and with an algorithm that categorizes them by their different shapes, with 90% accuracy. Even though it does not replace tests done in “real” labs, being mobile and cheap is a blessed quality that can save many lives. C’mon, aren’t you happy when you see technology helping people?

Smartgame?

It looks like things got stuck between Ericsson and Sony, in the joint venture they have for cell phone production. Once again the Japanese company thought that the prototype shown by the Swedish is not ok to have Playstation in its name.

According to this news,  the official story is that at this point “the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone”. On the other hand, rumors go that the truth is Sony wants to have a device of its own for this purpose.

Phoenix Palm

Ok, that’s not the real name of the company’s new model, but after a period of ostracism and doubts whether the brand was gonna be buried, it’s a hell of a comeback from the dead ashes indeed.

So Palm Pre was chosen the champion of CES 2009, getting 40% of the votes. It was also the winner in the best cell category. For a brand that saw its stock fall 90% in the past years and was competing against iPhone, Nokia, LG, RIM and others, not bad at all, huh?

Some other highlights included the half-netbook-half-notebook Vaio P from Sony, as well as its camera Cybershot G3, LG’s cell-watch and Lenovo’s dual screen notebook W700ds.
