The guys at Engadget got their hands on an OLED Walkman from Sony and wrote a “pre-review” (since the model was a Japanese pre-release with no internet access nor WiFi). Here’s some of the highlights:
Cool design for a robust, yet fully portable device. To those of you who get nervous with the tiny little nano iPod, it’s a good option.
The 3-inch screen (after all, it is OLED) is a hit. Its 243x240 resolution delivers clear and bright images with great touch features.
The software is pretty easy to use, as the file transferring from the computer.
Battery lasts for up to 33 hours.
Audio is the “ok Sony, you nailed it!” highlight. Well, it’s a PMP, isn’t it? According to the testers, it’s simply the best hi-fi sound you can get in this market.

How about this news from Sony, which will probably take the market by storm and be the leader in OLED technology? A flexible notebook with touchscreen. Press a button, the keyboard vanishes and you have a double-sized screen. Sweet.
Talking (or posting) about walkmans sounds outdated, right? Well, for the company that came up with the technology, it’s a matter of pride to present the first mp3 player walkman with OLED screen. Should be out in Q1.
IDC Brazil revealed a research showing that the computer market in the country had a 13% growth this year. Ok, it’s not the 18% estimated in the beginning of the year, but it’s still a good number – translated into 12 million units sold, 60% desktop.
Positivo, one of Brazil’s leading company, turned down a 18-dollar-a-piece offer from Lenovo, and rumors go that Dell would be interested as well. Sign that some folks are trying to consolidate their global positions as the financial crisis continues.
Add the launching of Metal Gear Solid and SimCity for iPhone and iPod, the rumors that a next generation of the iPhone with 128GB and OLED and the launching of Toshiba’s 512GB SSD, among other news, and we can foresee a not so dark 2009 for computers and internet.
If even Cristiano Ronaldo declared that he’s been exclusively online for the past 3 years and TV Esporte Interativo bought the broadcasting rights to show sub-17 and sub-20 soccer matches live and directly on the cell phone, it wouldn’t be a crisis like this to stop us, right? =o)
Kodak just marketed another digital photo frame, with the ‘small’ difference this one is the first to bring a OLED screen. 30,000:1 contrast, 7-inch screen, automatic brightness, 2Gb of storage and WiFi for online video and photo access.
Yeah, we know that flip cell phones are not new. But this is, ‘cause it brings an OLED screen. Check out the prototype Samsung showed in Japan this week:
It should take some time before it makes to the shelves, but it’s an indication that the current 2-inch screens are about to become history.
